Creator of Rock Garden

This imaginary kingdom of the Gods made by Nek Chand Saini. He had the hobby of collecting waste material from all around the city and nearby villages and using it to create arts.

The Rock Garden is also known as the Nek Chands Rock Garden. He has created an entire city with the kings darbar (courthouse), the queens resting place, their bathing quarters, the workers, the city well, the villagers, the soldiers, ladies from the royal families, and the animals and, the list goes on. In this spare time, he would use waste materials to sculpt figurines. In 1957, he used space just outside the city, near the Sukhna Lake to house his creative work. In 1975, the authorities sent him a notice for illegal possession of the land which had now grown to about 12 acres with his installations. They were going to evacuate him till they saw what he was doing, then he received the grant to create his masterpiece, the kingdom of Sukhna. The Kingdom was declared as a public space and Nek Chand Saini was designated the engineer of this Kingdom, The Rock Garden, and was given 50 workers to help him complete his creation. The garden was officially opened for a public visit in 1976 and soon turned into the most famous tourist spot of Chandigarh.
